Here I am receiving some pre-flight instruction. I had been trying to finish eating a sandwich prior to this, and I think my instructor was a little nervous that I was going to throw up during the jump, with a fully belly. :)
Here I am anticipating hurtling myself from an airplane! I was actually at the head of the line, which meant I was the first to exit the plane. I didn't get watch anyone else do it first to get an idea of what to expect.
But that didn't bother me too much as you can tell from my calm facial expression.
WOOHOO! I'm flying!!
I didn't expect to have so much trouble breathing in free fall, but I guess 110 mph wind will do that to you. I had to force myself to breathe, so that explains some of my awkward expressions.
I love how the wind is pushing my skin all over.
Our parachute is being deployed...
Everything slows down and I realize how much my ears had been pressurizing, my SCUBA diving training starts kicking in.
This what it looked like when I looked down. You can see the small airport below were we took off, and the grassy field we're landed in.
Here's our smooth and graceful landing.
YAY! I didn't die! I decided to be nice to mom and not tell her about my plan to jump out of a plane until I was safely on the ground. That way the worrying would only last a split second. I think I'll have to try this again! (Pretend you didn't read that mom...)
Here's the video of my jump so you can a better feel for what it was like. The instructor even let me hold the loops that control the parachute for a little while. It was very cool, spinning in circles, and controling which direction on the horizontal plane that you travel in. I think that's as close to flying like superman that I'll get. :)

Wow John, I'm very impressed. I can't believe how calm you look jumping out of the plane. I was wondering why I didn't know about this before but the not telling mom part explains it. Good thinking. I still can't believe you actually did it. You got some great pictures, too. And a new blog post. Yay!
Did you get a camera-man all to yourself? That's a pretty awesome video. Did you go with anybody? Seriously well played on the not telling mom thing. Man, if mom knew half the stuff I did... I mean... nothing.
Sadie's comment while watching the video: "What's wrong with him?"
I love Sadie's comment about the video. I suppose a person has to have some pretty firm face muscles to keep their skin from flapping too much in the strong wind. If John had arm dangles like some of the old people I have seen, he wouldn't even need a parachute!
Neil is so in trouble for his comment about some of the things he has done that he thinks I didn't know about. PS, I have heard several times about your 360 on the ice at the stop sign at Vaile Road.
And furthermore, I'm not as big a wimp as you guys think I am. I don't think its such a crime for a parent to hope to outlive their kids. The way some of you drive (Neil...) and some of you are so accident prone (John...), etc., etc... I think I have some legitimate fears here.
That said, I think its really cool that John went skydiving. It takes a whole lot of nerve to jump out of a plane. And thank you for not dying!
That's cool John. For many years, I thought it would be a lot of fun to skydive. It looked like a lot of fun. I tried jumping off cliffs on canoe trips instead. After a collision with a large rock, that was not so much fun any more. I’m glad you got to try it. Are you going to do it again or even make it a regular adventure? I'll have to wait until I get to work to watch the video; it is too hard to watch in slo-mo.
I can't believe you did this! Wild John!
I got nervous just watching the video! You've got some guts John! Greetings from Sao Paulo!
Yes Neil, I had my own cameraman. I went with my friend Chris Green. It was his birthday last week and he wanted to do something fun. So I happily volunteered to go with him.
Dad, I'd like to go again for sure. I don't know that I'd make it a regular activity though. I don't want to push my luck too much. :)
